Additional Information
Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib or AF, can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. AFib is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm. Over 5 million Americans are living with AFib today, and more than 12 million people are projected to have AFib by 2030.
Understand the definition, prevalence, associated co-morbidities, and economic burden that atrial fibrillation (AF) plays in the U.S.
· Identify the sources and location in the heart for AF
· Discuss the surgical modalities for treating AF and left atrial appendage management (LAAM), including appropriate interventions
· Establish the benefits of treating AF versus the risk of non-treatment
